IBM Connect Showcase 2014

As all years, you can meet all IBM Business Partners in the IBM Connect Showcase. Polycom has its own booth to demonstrate its cool and seamless integration with IBM Solutions like IBM Sametime (IBM Connections Chat & Meetings), IBM Kenexa BrassRings or IBM Care Manager (Healthcare solution).

In the long list of IBM Business Partner, I had the opportunity to meet a new cool integration with IBM Connections from a French Company named Reverso Softissimo : Reverso Translate for IBM Connections.
This solution allows you to easily collaborate with your colleagues all over the world with Reverso Machine Translation fully contextually integrated into IBM Connections -> Translate any text, from any page, on demand, instantly...

It eliminates the language barriers when you have to socialize !!!
Great, isn't it..

Watch this video if you want to see it in action...

IBM Connections & IBM Sametime => Awareness..

Today, working on my IBM Connections & Sametime platform, I made a discovery that I would like to share. That's stupid, but maybe I'm not the only one :) :)....
I have decided to implement IBM Sametime awareness though Sametime Client (Web API toolkit).
You can find the documentation here.

As normal tester, I only have one PC and traditionally, I do my test with one user. I have followed the procedure and started to check it works fine.

When I have accessed  to Profiles anonymously, I was able to see awareness. But, when I was logged with my account, I didn't see awareness information... Unbelievable !!!

So, I decided to check the code of the Profiles page.

And, I found a condition "If My profile, then don't display awareness"...
So, I have used a different account on the IBM Connections platform, and in that case, I was able to see Awareness...

That was the lesson of the day...

Polycom & IBM Connections Suite...

An example of Social Communications

IBM Connections Suite provides IBM’s social software, real-time social communications capabilities in a single offering. IBM Connections Suite is comprised of IBM Connections, IBM Sametime Advanced, IBM Sametime Unified Telephony Lite Client, IBM FileNet Content Manager (restricted use), and IBM Lotus Quickr Connectors.

Via this bundle, you can easily enhance the integration between Social & Video.
Imagine you are looking for someone, an expert on SIP technology in IBM Connections.

The IBM Connections business card provides you a snapshot of your expert profile information and contact details. You can adapt the card to change the information that it includes. In that example, I have added a new link allowing you to directly call Expert's Polycom video endpoint.
The call will be done between your IBM Sametime Client (via SUT lite feature) and the expert's endpoint.

How does it work?

It is very easy... I used three features of IBM Connections Suite in addition to Polycom Realpresence infrastructure (Polycom DMA & HDX).
  • IBM Connections Business Card Customization (here)
  • IBM Sametime Unified Telephony Lite (here)
  • IBM Sametime WebAPI Toolkit (here)
I have modified the file named LotusConnections-config.xml in my IBM Connections platform to add this element:

 <sloc:serviceReference serviceName="polycomService"  href="http://localhost:59449"   enabled="true"
     ssl_href="http://localhost:59449"   ssl_enabled="false"
     person_card_service_url_pattern="/stwebapi/call?number={telephoneNumber}"
     person_card_service_name_js_eval="'My Polycom endpoint'"/>

That element will use the REST service "http://localhost:59449/stwebapi/call?number=" and the parameter{telephoneNumber} which is the profile user's telephone number.

IBM Connections 4 live on Greenhouse...

IBM have just deployed IBM Connections 4 on Lotus Greenhouse platform... (here). You can now test all new great features of that release.

You can take action on content directly from your Activity Stream without switching contexts (via OpenSocial Embedded Experience)..

  • Easily share files & images in your status updates and images can easily preview as thumbnails.
  • Provide feedback in status updates by using a single click to indicate 'Like'. See and find others in the organization who liked the entry.
  • Follow conversations via hashtags.

  • Share your contents from any pages via ShareBox.
The "ShareBox" feature allows you for the integration of OpenSocial gadgets such as accessing a forum, posting content to an ERP system, posting content to an Activity, or sending a quick e-mail so that a social business can become more nimble and collaborate more broadly.

And now awesome features :) :)...

Leveraging Polycom Video technology within IBM Connections

In a previous blog entry (here), I have introduced "IBM Sametime Video Chat Plug-in for IBM Connections".
We just did first tests this afternoon with Fabrice Duband (IBM La Gaude UC² CoE), Karl Lawall (IBM WW Social Business Sales) and John-Pierre Campitelli (IBM Collaboration Solutions Solution Representative in Italy).

With that integration, directly from an IBM Connections platform, you can start a Polycom video session with all community members.

By leveraging Polycom Realpresence RMX, you can see, at the same time, all attendees.

First, 3 members:

And then, 5 members:

Everything is delivered through a simple Web interface via IBM Sametime WebPlayer.
That's fantastic !!! A good example of Social Communications & Video ubiquity...

IBM Sametime Video Chat Plug-in for IBM Connections Technology Preview

For those of you who have attended or watched the livestream of Lotusphere 2012 Opening Session, you may have seen a very awesome integration between IBM Connections, Sametime & Polycom RealPresence Platform: The ability to do a spontaneous video chat from a widget inside an IBM Connections community...

A piece of that demo have just been delivered as a preview on IBM DeveloperWorks.

IBM Sametime Video Chat Plug-in for IBM Connections Technology Preview
The IBM Sametime Video Chat Plug-in uses a Sametime meeting room to make it easy for people viewing an IBM Connections Community to get together for a spontaneous video chat. The widget is very simple, consisting only of a "Join" button and a counter showing how many people are currently in the video enabled meeting room. When individuals click to join, they are taken into a custom meeting room which includes only the video panel and associated audio/video controls, and the list of participants in the room. Audio and video are automatically started for each person as soon as they enter the room.

I'm attending Team Polycom, but when I'm back in France, I will try it and publish some pictures of that via Polycom integration...

Are SharePoint and Connections the New UC Clients?

I just read a very interesting article named "Are SharePoint and Connections the New UC Clients?"
On sentence is very important in that article: "The challenge to all of us in the enterprise communications and UC market is to embrace this delivery of communications as part of a business process, rather than as a separate silo which requires the user to switch from one application to another."

The link between Polycom RealPresence and IBM connections illustrates that powerful idea... Contextual collabration & Communication. That demo show this in action (here).

UC2 is definitely the action behind Social Business, providing tools you use when you need to do business now.

Polycom® RealPresence™ Social solutions extend HD video collaboration to "business social" networks—giving you new ways to connect and collaborate.

Video-enabled social platforms give you a new and powerful way to connect face-to-face with people in your business and social circles. With real-time video you have richer conversations, learn more, persuade more effectively, make better decisions faster, and bring more firepower to any team's productivity. Polycom RealPresence Social solutions allow you to:

  •     Make point-to-point and multi-point group calls in real-time through your Web browser.
  •     Record meetings or video messages.
  •     Archive videos for others to retrieve and view asynchronously.

New Polycom demos with IBM solutions

Polycom Marketing has published three new video demos on Youtube which demonstrate the added value of the IBM/Polycom.

IBM Sametime Integration - User-based Dialing :
Sametime user can launch a multipoint voice or video call to other Sametime users, and the call is automatically hosted by RMX.  The initiator or receiver of the call may select the “preferred device” for the call, including standards-based video systems

IBM Sametime Unified Telephony Lite Integration - Device-based Dialing :
With SUT Lite, Sametime user can call audio or video endpoints directly.
Sametime Server and DMA7000 are SIP trunked, and direct call between Sametime and telepresence systems can be made by using SIP number.

IBM Connections Integration :

This quick video shows the demonstration of Polycom RealPresence Platform native integration with IBM Sametime and collaboration software, such as IBM Connections, for social business integration.

If you want to discuss about it, don't hesitate to send an email to ibm@polycom.com

Social Networking & Gamification

Definition of Wikipedia : Gamification is the use of game design techniques and mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences.

Driving the Social Networking user adoption is fundamental. Gamification is a key element to drive that user adoption. Gamification will help to transform and accelerate organisations user adoption of IBM Connections by encouraging users to leverage the full range of social services.

By 2015, more than 50 percent of organizations that manage innovation processes will gamify those processes, according to Gartner, Inc.

Via Business Partners like Kudos or Bunchball, you can add this capability into IBM Connections.
Today, we had just finalized the deployment of Kudos solution into the IBM Connections demo platform of the IBM Collaboration Solutions Center.

You can watch an interesting session delivered last week at IBM Connect at Orlando

IBM Connections Profiles & Company's Location

IBM Connections is a powerful social software for business that lets you access everyone in your professional network, including your colleagues, customers, and partners.
IBM Connections is based a several modules like Community, Blog, Wiki...

One of these modules, Profiles, helps you to quickly find the people you need by searching across your organization using tags to identify expertise, current projects, and responsibilities.
In some organizations, in addition to employee profile, it could be useful to include informations about company's locations like address, telephone numbers, but also to share informations or tips between employees about that location...

IBM Connections provides customization capabilities in order to implement that feature :
- Profile Types
- Custom Widgets
- Custom extension attributes for Profiles

Profile Types is usually used to define employee types like Contractor and display specific informations, disclaimers per profile types. For example, IBM has added a widget "Disclaimer" in all profiles of contractors.
For demo-purpose, I have defined a new Profile types named "Sites".
In my case, Profile types will be used to configure the layout of the main Profiles page and the layout of the widgets used in Profiles.

To enable multiple profile types, you need set the EMPLOYEE.PROF_TYPE database table column for each user. Otherwise the default profile type is used.

Page Layout and Widgets:

After that, you have to modify the widget layout of the Profile page. The strategy is to remove unnecessary widgets like "Things in Common", "Report-to-Chain", remove unnecessary fields in "Contact Information" and add new widgets like "Map" or "Foursquare".

In order to customize the widget layout, you have to modify the file widgets-config.xml, as explained in the url.

Personaly, I have also added two new widget definition :
<widgetDef defId="Map" url="{contextRoot}/widget-catalog/map.xml?version={version}" modes="view fullpage" />
<widgetDef defId="Foursquare" url="{contextRoot}/widget-catalog/foursquare.xml?version={version}" modes="view fullpage" />

I have created simple widgets. If you want to deepen your knowledge of iwidgets, check that url.
Widgets become more and more important, I strongly encourage you to improve your skills on Widget technology and especially on OpenSocial Widget (http://docs.opensocial.org/display/OS/Home)

And, I have also added a new "layout resourceSubType" named "Sites" as described in the below picture :

In that layout, I have specified the two new widgets (previously defined) : "Map" which displayed a google map of the location and "Foursquare" which displayed the Foursquare site of the location and commented widget instances of unnecessary widgets.

Custom fields in Profile:

The Profiles application provides a set of default attributes (telephone number, Job Title...). Because every organization's directory structure is unique, the Profiles application also provides the ability to add additional custom extension attributes.
In our situation, it could interesting to add additional fields to define specific information regarding company's location.

In my example, I have added a new field to define "Location Code". In the Profiles-config.xml, you have to enable that attribute as described here.

To define the extension attribute, add it to the <profileExtensionAttributes> element under <profileDataModels> as follows:

To display the extension attribute, you need to associate it with a profile type, in our case, the "Site" Profile Type.

To finalize the deployment of a new attribut, you have to create a properties file containing the strings as described here.

End-User perspective:

After all these modification, the result is :

Main Page of the Site "IBM Ecully"

Google Map Widget

Foursquare Widget

IBM Connections 3 SPI & SMS

One of my french colleague has just published an article regarding the usage of IBM Connections SPI.
SPI could be very useful to handle events. In that blog entry, he shows you how to automatically send a SMS when you send an invitation to someone.

In that scenario, he has used his own android device as SMS gateway, but you could imagine to use a real SMS gateway, using the same principle.

IBM Connections Administration Toolkit (CAT)

A german Business Partner TIMETOACT Group has developped a web application to simplify IBM Connections Administration...
The IBM Connections Administration Toolkit in action...

CAT offers IBM Connections administrators an intuitive and efficient way to solve all the complex tasks required to successfully administrate a IBM Connections system:
  • Simplicity: Complex multilevel commands are shortened down to simple GUI windows
  • All in one: No need for the administrator to work directly with XML files or the wsadmin tool, everything can be done from within CAT
  • No technology skills required: Both XML editing and the Jython script commands are done by CAT, the administrator doesn’t necessarily need to know either
  • Safety: Several validity checks for performed changes to minimize the risk of demolishing your IBM Connections

Social Business & Video

In recent years, text based information on the Internet has given ways to richer content such as Audio, Video, Images; It is getting easier for people to create, edit, and share rich content.
Corporations recognize the power of video for both internal and external purposes and look for platforms to create their own channels to manage their content.

In parallel, the rise of enterprise social media is fundamentally changing the way people work. It empowers workers to develop, nurture, and remain in contact with a network of their colleagues; respond quickly to business opportunities by calling upon the expertise in their network; and discuss and refine new creative ideas with communities of coworkers, partners, and customers.

Linking Social Business & Video is important to generate new opportunities to share ideas and drive innovation throughout the company.

Koalink is one of the solutions in the market that delivers an end-to-end solution that streamlines the business processes of capturing, managing, storing, and distributing video content.

The deployment of a Rich Media publication solution will encourage employees to produce and publish their own video. Based on their set of APIs, Romain and I have tested a potential integration between IBM Connections Profiles and Koalink Library.
In each employee profile, you can access all employees' videos through a new widget.

That video illustrates this integration :

To extend the existing rich media capabilities of IBM Connections (details), you can imagine the type of widgets within a community.

This type of integration is also possible with other Video Content Management solutions in the market like Cisco Show & Share, Genus Technology...
