IBM & Mobility

In the next four years, according to Gartner, 90% of new devices that fall into the hands of users around the world, it will be smart phones and tablets. The number of enterprises using mobility grow rapidly. Several examples of use cases are already available in B2E, B2B and B2B situations.

By 2015, mobile application development projects targeting smartphones and tablets will outnumber native PC projects by a ratio of 4-to-1.

IBM Mobile Solutions on appstore

IBM, as a software provider,is deeply involved in that market. Responding to increased use of smartphone, tablets within workplaces, IBM have released several mobile applications designed to let employees use IBM enterprise software with iPads and other mobile devices.



Sametime Mobile : IBM's IM software, is now available for both iPad and Android clients.



Cognos Mobile : With IBM Cognos Business Intelligence, you can experience insight wherever you are, interact with information like never before and get trusted BI content delivered to your Apple iPad devices. link



Coremetrics for Mobile : Coremetrics for Mobile provides marketing executives with real-time access to their top-line performance metrics and key performance indicators, anytime, anywhere. link

 

PS : Most of the apps are free, but of course you have to be using the server versions that they correspond with in your company.


IBM Mobile Technology Preview

To help our customers to develop mobile application, IBM has introduced its Mobile Technology Preview on its developerWorks website. (Mainly available for the Android mobile operating system).

Included with this Technology Preview are the following:

Application Management : An application centric management infrastructure that provides basic support for central control over the mobile applications and allows developers to better tune their applications for central management.

Location Based Security : Security support has been expanded to include location based & continuous authentication features.

Hybrid Enablement Framework for building cross-platform mobile applications with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The IBM Mobile Technology Preview is utilizing the PhoneGap open source framework as a means to quickly deliver hybrid capabilities. Other hybrid approaches exist and may be used in addition to, or instead of, PhoneGap in future technology preview deliveries.

Notifications : A RESTful notification service and a client side notification library enables enterprise logic to post notifications to one or more target devices.

Application Server Runtime : The WebSphere Liberty Profile of the WebSphere Application Server 8.5 Alpha is provided as an application server runtime environment to run the server side samples and services.
